why a synchronous motor is not self starting

Small Size Motors falling in the category of Synchronous Moors are sometimes self starting, but the large motors are not self starting because of the inertia in rotor , when the stator winding is excited the rotor winding are not able to follow the stator fields synchronously due to inertia and hence a separated DC exciting to run the rotor shaft is applied.
