If we take an example of a 2 wire system, There is a Live wire and a Neutral wire. Live wire carries the current and Neutral wire works as the return path. A return path is necessary to complete the circuit. Hence in a closed circuit neutral wire carries same current as live wire. Ground is not the part of this closed circuit, ground wire should not carry any current in normal conditions. Whenever there is a fault the fault current flows through ground wire and goes to ground as ground has infinite capacitance. Earthing is done to avoid stray electric fields.
